ISL’s Environment Management Team provides expert environmental assessment, project permitting, construction monitoring and support for a wide variety of municipal, transportation, structural and land development projects within our local communities. A Little About You

Your cover letter must demonstrate:

Your resume should show us:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental consulting with a focus on serving municipal clients, fish habitat assessments and impact assessments, and construction mitigation.
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in Biology, Fisheries, Environmental or Aquatic Science or equivalent.
- Registration with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists as a P.Biol. or R.Biol.
- Practical understanding and implementation of provincial and federal legislation including: Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, CNWA, Public Lands Act and Water Act including Codes of Practice.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License is required.
Bonus points for:
- Obtained electrofishing operator certification.
- Direct experience with DRAS, EDS and OPAC government websites.
- Familiarity with mapping and data collection tools such as ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Survey 123, or Avenza Pro.
A Little More About the Role
Responsibilities:
Working out of our Edmonton or Calgary office as part of a multi-disciplinary team of professional biologists, archeologists, hydrogeologists, and engineers, the applicant will utilize their knowledge and experience to deliver a variety of services for our public and private sector clients. Our ideal candidate is open to learning, adaptable, and will embody kindness, respect, and a collaborative spirit as you serve as an ambassador for ISL during fieldwork, maintaining a high standard of professionalism when interacting with clients, contractors, and the public.
The successful candidate will hold a valid driver’s license, as occasional out of town travel will be required. Travel can be for up to 10 days at a time and could include remote locations. The nature of the position may, from time-to-time, require weekend work and work with variable hours.
A typical work week could include:
- Conducting fish and fish habitat assessments for municipal and transportation infrastructure projects (e.g., culverts, bridges, outfalls, water intakes), primarily within Alberta.
- Leading or supporting environmental field assessments independently or under senior biologist guidance, ensuring high-quality field documentation and data analysis.
- Monitoring construction activities on-site to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permits, and project scope.
- Applying regulatory frameworks such as the Water Act, Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, and other relevant provincial and federal legislation.
- Preparing Environmental and Biophysical Impact Assessments, Environmental Evaluations, and Environmental Risk Assessments, including providing QAES recommendations and Request for Review submissions.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams to integrate mitigation strategies that reduce environmental and regulatory risks.
- Communicating professionally with clients, contractors, regulators, and stakeholders, providing timely updates and technical guidance.
- Supporting regulatory correspondence and assist in the development of mitigation strategies and permit applications.
- Participating in proposal writing and business development initiatives.
- Training and mentoring junior staff, fostering technical growth and field readiness.
- Travelling across Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan for field programs, often in remote or challenging environments and weather conditions.
- Maintaining and calibrating field equipment, manage inventory, and schedule service appointments.
- Maintaining professional registration as a Registered Biologist (R.Biol.) or Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
