Your Role in Our Vision
As part of a collaborative team, you’ll contribute to rapid transit infrastructure that further connects destinations and communities across York Region and beyond, supporting growth for generations to come.
Reporting to the project lead on the Property, Environmental, and Development Infrastructure team, the Project Specialist collaborates with York Region’s (YR) Realty and Environmental Services teams, as well as Development Engineering and Local Municipal Planning teams, to oversee large and complex real estate, environmental, and development infrastructure portfolios for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and subway expansion, including financial administration.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provides strategic guidance to the YRRTC project team on real estate and environmental considerations throughout the Environmental Assessment process and engineering design phase.
- Oversees project property requirements and environmental due diligence in collaboration with the Region’s Realty/Environmental Services teams and project consultants, ensuring the delivery of necessary surveys (e.g., reference and expropriation plans) and environmental studies (e.g., Phase I and II ESAs, RAPs, Risk Assessments, Investigations/Remediation). This includes coordinating efforts with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) and environmental consultants.
- Acts as a liaison between the YRRTC project team, YR Realty/Environmental Services teams, local municipalities, surveyors, project consultants, MECP, and environmental consultants to address property owners' concerns, facilitating mutually agreeable solutions for land acquisitions, settlements, and agreements. Manages environmental impact assessments and remediation efforts, including closeout reports, risk mitigation measures, and long-term monitoring requirements.
- Ensures timely and transparent communication of property acquisition and environmental due diligence status updates to YRRTC-YR project teams and project managers.
- Maintains organized records of communications, documents, and materials exchanged between the YRRTC project team and YR Realty/Environmental Services teams.
- Fosters strong relationships with colleagues, internal and external stakeholders, members of the public, and project partners.
- Collaborates with the YRRTC Procurement Manager and YR Realty/Environmental Services teams to facilitate efficient property and environmental-related procurement processes within the Region’s procurement framework.
- Oversees the coordination and circulation of development applications for technical review and feedback related to various projects.
What You Bring to the Team
- Completion of a post-secondary diploma in Business Administration, Urban or Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering Technology, Public Policy and Administration, or a related field—or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least five (5) years of experience demonstrating significant success in one or more of the following areas:
- providing technical support for planning aspects of major capital projects, including subway expansions, LRT, or BRT initiatives/projects
- supporting major transit or transportation-related capital project management and construction
- designing and delivering planning, urban design, or real estate and environmental programs, services, and materials
- providing progressively senior administrative and project support to senior management
- Possession of a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for corporate business
- Experience with or knowledge of public transportation systems
- Familiarity with municipal, regional, and provincial operations
- Strong understanding of project planning principles, methodologies, and best practices
- Proficiency in corporate core competencies, including customer focus, communication, collaboration, and personal ownership
- Expertise in querying, analyzing, and manipulating mapping information
- Working knowledge of GIS, AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite
- Ability to convey real estate, planning, or urban design concepts through drawing or sketching
- Self-motivated with the capacity to quickly learn, plan, and manage workload independently
- Willingness to travel to offsite locations efficiently, as needed
- Flexibility to work beyond regular business hours when required
