Job Description:

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Coordinator, the Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist prioritizes referrals and is responsible for assessment, treatment and management of communication, feeding and swallowing disorders to ensure optimum patient care for pediatric patients and their caregivers.

Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Island Health in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

  • Master's Degree in Speech/Language Pathology; and
  • Current registration with the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of British Columbia (CSHBC); and
  • Certified Practice Certification in all 3 of the following areas:
    • Certificate E - Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Voice and Swallowing
    • Certificate H(b/c/e/f) - Communication and Swallowing Assessment and Management for Tracheostomy
    • Certificate J - Videofluoroscopic Assessment and Management of Paediatric Disorders
  • Valid BC Driver's License

Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to be perceptive to the needs of pediatric patients and their caregivers and able to act accordingly with tact, patience, and optimism.
  • Ability to interact effectively with children with disabilities and their caregivers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other professional disciplines, other hospital staff, patients and their caregivers and representatives from external agencies.
  • Ability to integrate into an interdisciplinary team to provide collaborative patient care.
  • Demonstrates planning and instructional skills.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
