The Southern Health-Santé Sud region is seeking a motivated Physician Assistant/Clinical Assistant (PA/CI.A) for a part-time position .4 FTE on the medical ward and 1 in 4 on-call for surgical assist at the Boundary Trails Health Centre.

The Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC) is a 94-bed regional Centre located between Winkler & Morden. It serves an area with a population of over 50,000 people. It is an integral part of the services offered by Southern Health-Santé Sud.

The Physician/Clinical Assistant (PA/CI.A) is an academically prepared healthcare professional, educated in the medical model that practices medicine under the supervision of licensed physicians within a patient-centered healthcare team. The PA/CI.A is a physician extender and not an independent practitioner. This position is part of the PCAM union.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Hospitalists, Surgeons and other Physicians from the Boundary Trails Health Centre, the PA/CI.A will be integrated with other members of the health care team within the hospital.

The primary responsibility of the PA/CI.A will be to the Hospitalist group of doctors during week days and as surgical assist on call for 1 weekend in 4. The PA/CI.A will assist the Hospitalists by being responsible for comprehensive care to inpatients, which will include initial assessments (including histories and physicals), following up on laboratory results, developing and implementing treatment plans and providing chronic disease management follow-up as appropriate.

On the 1 in 4 weekend OR assist rotation, the responsibility would be to provide OR assistance and help Surgeons with ER consults and rounding on surgical patients when possible. The PA/CI.A will provide either a surgical opinion for the ER Physician or arrange for an admission to the surgery ward or to arrange for possible emergency surgery.

Pre-Operative

• Assist FP-Anesthetists with regional anesthesia (blocks) including setting up and monitoring patients post block but pre-OR
• Work with nursing as needed to improve flow of same day surgery patients
• Assist with set up of instruments, surgical assisting on small procedures
  
  

Operative

• Surgical assisting for surgical emergencies
• Improve flow of patients between OR/ward/SDS to increase OR efficiencies
  
  

Post-Operative

• Surgical inpatient rounding with surgeon & family physician supervision
• Wound checks
• Discharge planning and coordination
• Assist in development and adoption of an ERAS system including:
• Appropriate use of prn medications
• Ensuring ambulation
• Ensuring timely removal of IVs and catheters
• Problem solving patient specific barriers to these interventions
  

It is important that productive, cooperative working relationships be established between the Physician/Clinical Assistant and the attending physicians, other primary health care providers, nursing staff, support staff, itinerant consultants, health facility administrators, community leaders, and most importantly, the patients and their families.

THIS IS NOT A MEDICAL ASSISTANT OR MEDICAL OFFICE ASSISTANT POSITION

Salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications and is accompanied by a benefits package.

Qualifications

• Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba as a Physician Assistant or Clinical Assistant.
• Must be eligible for a Medical Staff Appointment
• Prior experience preferred.
  
  

Physician Assistants

• Candidates must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Educational Program acceptable to CPSM
  
  

Clinical Assistants

• Must be a graduate of an accredited Medical School in Canada or abroad
• Must have at least one of the following:
• Clinical Assistant Assessment
• NAC OSCE
• LMCC
