Senior Project Cost Accounting Consultant

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Project Cost Accounting Consultant to join their team in Calgary. The successful candidate will be responsible for tracking, analyzing, and reporting project costs to ensure financial efficiency and compliance with budgets. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with a strong understanding of construction accounting principles, project costing, and financial reporting. This is a 3 to 6 month contract role.

Your Success Will Be Defined By Your Ability To

• Oversee the financial health of assigned construction projects (up to 15 active projects concurrently).
• Set up new projects in the accounting system
• Monitor project costs against budgets
• Manage change orders, ensuring proper documentation, financial approval, and timely incorporation into project budgets and billing.
• Prepare and submit accurate and timely progress billings (e.g., AIA, percentage of completion)
• Track and manage accounts receivable for all projects
• Process lien waivers and conditional payment notices as required.
• Review and approve subcontractor invoices and supplier payments.
• Reconcile vendor statements and resolve payment issues.
• Manage retainage balances for both accounts payable and accounts receivable.
• Generate comprehensive financial reports for each project.
• Provide regular financial updates and insights to project teams
• Assist in internal and external audits
• Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes and internal controls
• Serve as the primary financial point of contact for assigned project teams.
• Communicate effectively with project managers, operations staff, and clients to facilitate smooth financial operations.
• Mentor and support junior accounting staff as needed.
  
  

Your strengths include:

• 5+ years of progressive experience in project accounting, with a strong emphasis on the construction industry.
• Proficiency in Acumatica construction accounting software an asset.
• Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, financial modeling).
• Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and construction-specific accounting methods (e.g., percentage of completion).
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
