Reporting to the Manager of Engineering Services (Avalon Region), the Design Approval Technician IIB is responsible for interpreting, implementing and enforcing fire, life safety and accessibility regulations, codes and standards that govern the design, construction and use of buildings and facilities. Specifically, this position reviews and registers drawings and specifications for construction/alteration of buildings and gasoline/diesel/fuel oil systems for regulatory conformance; provides expertise to various internal and public stakeholder groups; maintains a database for registrations and inspections; inspects personal care, alternate family care, day care facilities and registered projects; prepares reports outlining applicable deficiencies; and issues related permits; and performs other related duties as required. This position will have duties province wide.

Screening Criteria

  1. Completion of a three-year diploma program in Civil Engineering Technology or Architectural Engineering Technology
  2. Experience interpreting, applying, preparing or approving building codes, regulations or standards (asset)
  3. Experience in performing regulatory compliance relating to building design or construction (asset)


Assessment Criteria

  1. Knowledge of building design and construction practices and standards
  2. Knowledge of fire and life safety practices and standards
  3. Knowledge of fire alarm and suppression systems (asset)
  4. Ability to manage time and tasks
  5. Ability to effectively exchange information
  6. Client-service orientation

  3. Acknowledges requirement for day travel (significant)
  4. Acknowledges requirement for overnight travel (occasional)
  5. Acknowledges the requirement to complete Fire Inspector I training
