Job Description

Position Purpose summary:

The Community Ministry Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army. This position also provides support to other programs provided by the Community and Family services. This position provides supervision for volunteers.

Accountabilities

Client Services and Programs

  • Give oversight to community ministries programs, ensuring ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and that a spiritual focus is applied to all program initiatives.
  • Conduct intake interviews, client assessment and emergency assistance for clients to determine immediate needs and supports required.
  • Refer clients to other community resources or Corps Officer for pastoral assistance where appropriate.
  • Network with Salvation Army, government and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program.
  • Develop and maintain a good understanding of services provided by external agencies.
  • Organize season or special programs i.e. Christmas Hamper Program, summer workshops, etc.
  • Recruit and register children and youth for The Salvation Army provincial camping programs.
  • In consultation with Corps Officer, follow up with children and youth who attend The Salvation Army summer camp programs, including their families, in order to build relationships and establish active links with the Corps and its mission and ministries.
  • Network with local Community College and University around student placement.
  • Oversee and complete appropriate reporting for community-based grants.
  • Actively promote North Bay Community Church and Community Services programs to food bank clients.
  • Work with other Family Services staff to maintain, promote and improve the profile of The Salvation Army North Bay Community Church and Community Services programs within the community.

Supervision

  • Provide direction and support to all family services volunteers and student placements, ensuring that they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
  • Recruitment, orientation, performance management of volunteers and student placements in consultation with Corps Officer or designate.
  • Oversee student placement assignment and conduct weekly supervisory meetings, mid and end-point evaluations.
  • Develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
  • In consultation with the supervisor may organize regular meetings with volunteers.

Finance & Administration

  • Provide direction and support to all family services volunteers and student placements, ensuring that they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.

Health and Safety

  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of the ministry unit by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.

Perform Other Duties As Required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – infrequent evening and weekend work may be required once a month, when needed.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
  • Occasional travel (up to 5%) is associated with this position, i.e., attending committee meetings.
  • Ability to lift/move more than 30 lbs. (4.5kg).

Normal hours of work – 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday and includes a a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable. The working conditions are such that to meet the operational needs of the job some flexibility is required as it relates to hours of work.

Normal location of work is at: 743 Main St East, North Bay.

The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.

Education And Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma in Social Services work or equivalent.
  • Safe Food Handling Certification is an asset.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification is an asset.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training preferred.
  • Conflict Resolution skills are a definite asset.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience And Skilled Knowledge

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons with mental health issues
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle, and insurance, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract for review and verification that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $18.99 to $23.73 with a maximum of $28.48.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
