RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director, Administration of the RI-MUHC, the incumbent is responsible for drafting, reviewing, negotiating contracts and agreements, legal documentation and performing general administrative duties in the Contracts Office for the research community of the RI-MUHC.

Pay Scale: $44,408.00- $82,427.80. Commensurate with education & work experience.
Work Shift: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm or 9:00am to 5:00pm

Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director, Administration of the RI-MUHC, the incumbent is responsible for drafting, reviewing, negotiating contracts and agreements, legal documentation and performing general administrative duties in the Contracts Office for the research community of the RI-MUHC.
General Duties
- Reviews research agreements for clinical and non-clinical research projects,
- Chooses or drafts appropriate contract templates to a high professional standard and in conformance with current guidelines, based on analysis of the scope of collaborations, agreements and studies,
- Negotiates legal clauses and budgetary requirements with external clients of the RI-MUHC in order to resolve any contractual issues,
- Analyses the implications and repercussions of legal clauses or potential liability exposure of certain contractual clauses in order to ensure the protection of the RI-MUHC and the investigators,
- Provides contractual advice and service and acts as a facilitator and resource to clinicians, researchers, study coordinators and sponsors,
- Contacts various private and/or public bodies within the framework of the required procedures, engages in ongoing communication with all stakeholders and solves conflicts that arise during contract negotiations,
- Establishes best legal practices and procedures in order to ensure compliance with guidelines, laws, etc., in collaboration with the members of the Contracts Office,
- Establishes excellent collaboration with internal departments within the RI-MUHC,
- Liaises with legal counsel as applicable,
- Plans and executes complex administrative assignments related to the administration of the Contracts Office,
- Updates and maintains a central registry for the initiation and monitoring of all research agreements,
- Performs closeout processes of fully executed contracts, as needed.

Education: Diploma of College Studies (DEC)
Field of Study: Paralegal Technology or Certificate in law
Other Education Considered An Asset For This Position
- Bachelor’s of Law (not required to be a member of the Bar of Quebec),
- Education in science.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in research contracts negotiation, preferably in a Health Care-related or University environment
- Related experience with similar responsibilities,
- Experience working with legal contracts and agreements,
- Experience in solving legal questions using research and problem-solving skills,
- Knowledge of the health network environment.
- Ability to work under pressure, strict deadlines and manage multiple priority workload,
- High level of accuracy and analytical skills,
- Understanding of basic notions of intellectual property law and licensing rights,
- Ability to display a high degree of discretion in dealing with confidential information,
- Ability to work in a team environment where constructive feedback to/from colleagues is encouraged,
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint),
- Knowledge of legal research tools,
- Excellent French and English language skills, written and spoken,
- Solid verbal and written communication skills,
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills,
- Demonstrates diplomacy, discretion and good judgment,
- Ability to be pro-active and take the leading role in negotiations with external clients.
