Job Purpose

The Quality Assurance Manager (QAM) is responsible for ensuring that the products manufactured meet the company's quality and safety standards. This role involves developing and maintaining quality management systems, conducting regular inspections and audits, and implementing corrective actions when necessary. The manager works closely with various departments to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and standards, and to continuously improve the quality of the products. The QAM is accountable for monitoring product and employee practices throughout the production facility via direct supervision of the Quality Control (QC) Manager / QC Supervisor as well as maintaining technical production information that is issued to the production floor, to maintain the Food Safety and Quality standard.

Duties And Responsibilities

The associate’s primary functions and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Ensure the products manufactured meet the company’s finished product quality and food safety expectations, as per customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage and lead the day-to-day activities of the QC Manager/QC Supervisor, and document control team.
  • Interact with regulatory personnel, food safety auditors, and customers to maintain positive and responsive relationships and ensure rapid corrective actions through dynamic leadership and timely documentation.
  • Perform internal audits according to the internal audit calendar. Review non-conformances from internal and external audits to identify areas of improvement.
  • Keep up-to date with all third-party requirements including BRC, Organic, Kosher, and RSPO.
  • Investigate Quality Department -related non-conformances and provide corrective and preventative actions. Monitor and verify activities to ensure new processes are effectively implemented and effective. Collaborate with other departments to investigate non-conformances arising from audits.
  • Manage Environmental monitoring and Allergen validation program and take appropriate corrective actions. Escalate non-conformances to the Quality Director.
  • Provide immediate and direct support to quality related issues as they occur on the plant floor, including completing full investigations on product quality and quality hold items to present to the Quality Director.
  • Undertake mock recall and traceability exercises test according to scheduled frequency.
  • Participate in customer visits or third-party audits.
  • Manage customer complaints investigations, determine root causes, and help implement corrective actions. Keep the Quality Director informed of all serious customer complaints and product quality trends.
  • Conduct risk assessments of potential new suppliers and new raw materials in conjunction with the Purchasing Department.
  • Provide training to employees as directed by Quality Director.
  • Coach, train and lead the QC and document control team to ensure Food Quality and Safety is maintained throughout the process.
  • Oversee process checks throughout the production, packaging, sanitation and warehouse functions of the company including GMP, metal detection, label and coding verification, general hygiene and safety, as well as in process and finished product weights and record on Quality audit report.
  • Oversee Pest Control Program including but not limited to reporting any pest related issues to pest control technician, reviewing Pest control technician’s recommendations and take necessary actions.
  • Taste products to ensure product acceptability.
  • Maintain interdepartmental relationships through open communication and collaboration in meetings and emails and understanding other department processes. Encourage feedback from others and keep everyone updated on changes. (AA – from QC Manager).
  • Collaborate with other Quality Managers and FSQS department within the company to ensure procedural and policy alignment between sites.
  • Co-lead site manager meetings to enhance collaboration, improve communication channels, align company and interdepartmental goals, and continuously improve the overall plant efficiencies and work culture.
  • Responsible for daily management and support for the team to achieve operational success.
  • Monitor time and attendance and ensure compliance with Company Procedures.
  • Approve the vacation requests.
  • Carry out incident, accident and non-conformity investigations and associated reporting and action closure.
  • Issue disciplinary action when needed.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
  • Follow Health and Safety rules and regulations.
  • Must follow Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Safety, and Food Defense guidelines.
  • Comply with all Company policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (Food Science) degree or Science related degree (e.g., chemistry, microbiology)
  • 10 years of experience in the food industry with a minimum of 3 years of managerial/supervisor experience.
  • Must have detailed experience and training in implementing and managing food safety systems in a manufacturing environment against at least one GFSI Benchmarked food safety standard (BRC preferred).
  • Must have HACCP qualification (ideally advanced level).
  • Must have internal auditing training.
  • Must have experience leading 3 rd party GFSI audits.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Canadian food safety regulations including SFCA. (US regulatory knowledge including FSMA/FSVP would be an asset).
  • Must be competent in using standard computer software packages including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Experience in delivering training and public speaking.
