Position Summary


As a Junior Estimator, you will provide assistance to the Pre-Construction team throughout the design and estimation phase of the project. In particular, you will be responsible for preparing accurate preliminary cost analyses, as well as planning, coordinating, overseeing timeline development, and providing research, recommendations, guidance, and supervision for improving project progress. You are motivated and eager to learn the mass timber industry with an award-winning mass timber subcontractor.


As a Junior Estimator your key accountabilities will involve:


  • Conducting research and taking on additional assignments aimed to further the pre-construction and negotiations knowledge base for sharing within the department.
  • Preparing initial cost estimates for the required supplies and services needed and creating pricing schedules.
  • Developing bid proposals, assessing the technical aspects, and supporting risk analysis assessments.
  • Recognizing and resolving areas of risk within projects, e.g., exclusions, clarifications, and price adjustments.
  • Communicating with Project Managers during the bidding process to gain real time feedback on tender issues.
  • Collaborating with other departments during pre-construction to proactively identify salient issues and resolve accordingly.
  • Reviewing final estimate packages, to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to formal citation.
  • Preparing and taking part in presentations to clients, and maintaining good client relationships, including sourcing new work with existing clients.
  • Developing new ideas, forms, and approaches to increasing effectiveness and efficiency within the department.


As a Junior Estimator your experience and qualifications will include:


  • Graduate from a recognized Engineering, Architectural, or Construction Management program
  • Mass Timber experience is an asset
  • Experience in construction projects—preferably with some estimating involvement and accountability is an asset
  • Detailing/CAD experience is an asset
  • Basic understanding of construction methodology, e.g., development, contracting, and consulting
  • Motivated and eager to learn the mass timber industry
  • Familiarity with various negotiation tactics and bid methods, and types of head contracts
  • Competence in reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications
  • Tech-savvy and high computer literacy in Excel spreadsheets
  • Exceptional interpersonal, bargaining, and written communication skills
  • Keen understanding of construction materials and techniques, subtrades markets, and insurance and bonding requirements
  • Expertise and confidence with prioritizing and time-managing a multitude of tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced, deadline-driven, team-based environment
