About the Opportunity

Hazelwood Construction Services is looking for a full-time Civil Estimator based in Nanaimo or Victoria, B.C, on a hybrid work schedule.


Reporting to the General Manager, the Civil Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and timely quantity take-offs and cost estimates for civil construction projects, ensuring competitive bids through strategic planning and industry expertise.


More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Preparing cost estimates aligned with project specifications and past experience
  • Developing detailed estimates using Explorer and/or Heavy Bid estimating software
  • Preparing and submitting tenders and proposals, ensuring alignment with project requirements
  • Conducting thorough reviews of tender documents, drawings, and site conditions
  • Building and maintaining a database of suppliers, subcontractors, unit costs, and productivity factors
  • Actively identifying and pursuing public and private bid opportunities
  • Reviewing estimates and tenders with the General Manager and other Estimators
  • Participating in project kick-off meetings and assisting the Project Manager once awarded
  • Performing additional estimating duties as required


About You

To qualify, you will need a Civil Engineering degree or Civil Technology Diploma and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in civil construction estimation. A combination of education and experience will be considered. Experience in road construction, bridges, run-of-river hydro, excavation, and underground utilities will also be essential. A valid driver's license and reliable vehicle is required.


Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Gold Seal certification
  • Proficiency with Explorer and/or Heavy Bid estimating software
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Strong understanding of unit costs, labor rates, and productivity factors
  • Experience preparing and submitting competitive tenders and proposals
  • Familiarity with public and private bidding processes
