Eligibility for the post-basic training education is restricted to applicants with a minimum of 1 year recent acute medical/surgical experience.

BCIT Neonatal ICU Nursing Specialty Program

Online Prerequisites (if required) September 3, 2024 - November 22, 2024

Full-time training at BCIT & practicum locations January 6, 2025 - March 21, 2025

  • course dates will be modified based on previous courses completed, VCH only funds for required courses.


Applicants must successfully complete the post-basic training education prior to working in the Department.

Candidates accepting this training opportunity agree to remain with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a regular status nurse in the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they are hired for at least 18 months subsequent to completing training.

This will ensure that candidates are able to consolidate and apply skills in the specialty area that VCH has supported and funded candidates to complete. In the event that a candidate leaves the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they were hired or VCH in under 18 months, VCH will seek to recover the cost of the program.

The salary range for this position is CAD $41.42/Hr. - CAD $55.91/Hr.

Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Registered Nurse to join the Neonatal ICU team at at Lions Gate Hospital, North Vancouver, BC. Apply today to join our team!

As a Registered Nurse with VCH you will

  • Work in collaboration with other members of the health care team, to use appropriate clinical judgment to provide optimal neonatal care to patients and their families.
  • Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and appropriate documentation of care for assigned patients in Special Care Nursery.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adheres to standards of professional nursing and patient care practice in accordance with Health Authority policies and procedures.


Education & Experience

  • Graduate of an approved nursing program. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and current National Registration in CPR - NRP required.

  • Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to designated client group.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care in relation to client/family priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess client responses to care and to respond appropriately.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and deal effectively with clients and their families, co-workers, physicians, other health care staff and staff of outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to counsel and teach clients and their families based on their priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Demonstrated skill in techniques appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized patient care information system.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.


The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.

As per the current Public Health Orders, as of October 5, 2023, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received a single dose of the most-recent, updated COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
