Position Summary: Sexual Assault and Domestic Vioelnce Srevices Mandate:
Trillium Health Partners operates the regional program for the medical/forensic care of:
- women and men 12 years of age or older who have been recently sexually assaulted
- women and men 16 years of age or older who have incurred recent physical injuries as a result of domestic violence
- children under the age of 12 who have reported sexual assault/abuse
Clients may access this 24-hour service through the Mississauga Hospital Emergency Department and are cared for by a specially trained nurse. A process of: assessment, treatment, documentation (may include photography), safety planning and referral is undertaken by the nurse in the safety and security of a private unit separate from the Emergency Department called Chantel’s Place.
The Principle Responsibilities include:
Clinical Practice
Demonstrates advanced knowledge and analysis of nursing practice issues, within the scope of NP practiceIn collaboration with others, develops innovative approaches for complex practice issuesPerforms a comprehensive history that records and interprets the pertinent medical, family and psychosocial history
Consultation
Uses advance practice skills and consultation modelSupporting both internal and external consultations. Assists nurses, other interprofessional team members and community partners in managing medical, forensic and psychosocial issues while exploring options and facilitating change. Areas of consultation may include clinical concerns such as complex symptom management, psychosocial and emotional issues related to trauma.
Education
Assesses learning needs for professional development of nurses and others within the clinical practice areaIdentifies and creates effective learning environments and creates resources for learning for patients/families, physicians and other health care professionalsProvides clinical supervision, education and mentorship for undergraduate and graduate nursing students
Research
Contributes to others' understanding and application of research and evidenced-based practice
Participates in research and utilization and may participate in research studies Communicates the importance of research findings relevant to clinical practice Demonstrates and promotes critical thinking in others to formulate and explore research questions
Bases own clinical practice on research and evidenced-based practice and reviews relevant literature
Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to participate on research committee.Engages nursing staff and other members of the interprofessional team
Leadership
Participates and provides leadership internally and externally In consultation with the inter-professional team, participates in quality improvement activities
Anticipates future changes (technology, system, professional development) and participates in providing recommendation and implications
Participates in decision making process regarding decisions which impacts on practice
Maintains and seeks memberships in provincial and national organizations which will promote self-growth and contributes to patient care and the nursing profession
Oversees and supports best practices and professional accountabilities
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Graduate of recognized college or school of nursing
- Current certifications of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Masters degree in nursing with an approved Nurse Practitioner component
- RN (EC) license
- Exceptional skills of leadership, self-direction and interpersonal communication
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training preferred in Adult. Adolescent and Paediatric populations.
- Forensic Nurse experience in caring for both adult and pediatric patient population preferred
- 2 years’ experience working with SA/DV clients preferred.
- 2 years acute care nursing experience preferred.
- Experience performing speculum exams, vaginal examinations and venipuncture preferred
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.)
- Ability to pick up on call when required
- Chair of the internal monthly staff council meetings
- Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the needs of sexual assault/domestic violence survivors
- Strong interpersonal skills combined with excellent assessment skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Preference given to bilingual practitioners
- Ability to speak other languages an asset
- Positive attendance and work record essential
