Job Information
The Bilingual Emergency Medical Dispatcher, NWT 9-1-1 is a certified, licensed public safety telecommunicator responsible for providing safe and effective call-taking and processing of emergency services within the Northwest Territories, including pre-arrival basic medical instructions as needed. The position also provides surge, break and mealtime emergency medical call-taking, triage and dispatch services for Med-Response (GNWT air ambulance dispatch, emergency medical and support service), which services every community in the NWT.
This position is located in Yellowknife.
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Power-user level understanding of telecommunicator systems, primary control console and radio/cell/telephony dispatching 9-1-1 systems, digital logger and communication recall, electronic aircraft tracking systems, video conferencing equipment, electronic medical records and any other emergency systems required in the day-to-day operations of the NWT 9-1-1 and Med-Response.
- Knowledge of the NWT 9-1-1 Act and Regulations, Emergency Measures Act, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Health Information Act.
- Ability to think analytically and relationally while solving complex problems.
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Typically attained by :
Certification or degree in pre-hospital emergency medical care above first responder levels ( e.g., Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic) plus two years' experience as a first responder.
OR
- Canadian Armed Forces Medical Technician QL3 or greater.
- Other combinations of relevant education and experience will be considered.
- Direct experience working in emergency services within the NWT, Northern community experience, and/or experience working with NWT eHealth systems would be considered assets.
Training and certification in NWT 9-1-1 and Med-Response processes and systems will be provided before the incumbent begins to provide services.
